Finally at FOB Salerno Afghanistan

After over one grueling week of travel, we finally made it to FOB Salerno, Afghanistan at about 3am this morning. We flew out of Bagram on a C-130 at about 1am, stopped at Sharana base and then landed here on a gravel runway (yes C-130s can do that).

Since most of you don't know, the FOBs (forward operating bases) near the border of Pakistan do not have ANY visible lights at night for security reasons. Don't want the Taliban firing at an easy target. You've never seen dark until you've seen lights out with absolutely no light pollution except for the stars. If the moon is not out, you can't see your hand in front of your face. The stars are absolutely incredible in this environment. Of course, it makes getting to the bathroom in the middle of the night challenging because the lavatory is not in the same building where we sleep.

Well it's steak night here on Friday nights, and after that I'm going to hit the sack and hopefully get about ten hours or so. I'll give you more insights tomorrow---Jack out!
